Happy Monday, Ndaxers— Here’s what happened last week:

TOP STORIES
Deutsche Bank moves crypto custody into production
- Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch its first digital-asset custody service in Germany within the next few weeks. The bank will begin with Bitcoin and Ether before eventually expanding into stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and blockchain-based securities such as digital bonds. The bank also plans to expand the service into major Asian financial centres in 2027 as part of a broader push to grow its corporate-banking business. (Reuters)
- Why it matters: Deutsche Bank is ready to offer the infrastructure needed to actually hold digital assets. Custody is a foundational requirement for banks, asset managers, and businesses that want crypto exposure without managing private keys themselves. The bank’s longer-term plans for stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and digital bonds suggest it views custody as the first layer of a much larger digital-asset vision than a standalone product.
Strategy faces new passive-investment headwind
- MSCI finalized a new methodology last week that will classify certain companies with limited operating businesses and investment-like characteristics as ineligible for its Global Investable Market Indexes. The rules take effect at the November index review and could affect Strategy and other digital-asset treasury companies. Current index constituents generally must fail MSCI’s screening criteria across their two most recent annual filing periods before removal. (The Block)
- Why it matters: Strategy’s investment thesis relies on much more than just Bitcoin’s price going up. Its shares benefit from access to deep public-equity markets and demand from funds that automatically track major indexes. If Strategy is removed from MSCI indexes, passive funds tracking those benchmarks may need to sell or reduce their holdings to reflect the updated indexes.
Solana prepares for its biggest consensus change
- Solana has scheduled Alpenglow to activate on mainnet during epoch 1064, expected to begin on October 21. The upgrade replaces Solana’s existing TowerBFT consensus system and targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, down from about 12.8 seconds today. Validator votes will also stop appearing as transactions in blocks and instead be exchanged directly between validators and aggregated into certificates. As a result, Solana’s reported transaction count and TPS could fall sharply after activation even if actual user activity remains unchanged. (CoinDesk)
- Why it matters: Alpenglow changes one of the most fundamental parts of how Solana operates. Near-instant finality could materially improve applications where users need certainty that a transaction cannot be reversed, including payments, trading and cross-chain transfers. Alpenglow is also a real-world test for Solana as the network hopes to dramatically improve settlement speed while changing its underlying consensus system.

Canadian spotlight: VersaBank takes tokenized deposits commercial
- Ontario-based VersaBank announced last week that it has entered the commercial phase of its U.S. tokenized-deposit program. VersaBank’s U.S. subsidiary plans to issue VUSD, an interest-paying, digital representation of a conventional U.S.-dollar bank deposit that is expected to be eligible for FDIC, on blockchain infrastructure. (The Globe and Mail)
- Why it matters: Unlike a traditional stablecoin, VUSD represents a deposit issued by a regulated bank and can potentially combine blockchain-based transfers with interest payments and deposit-insurance eligibility. For a Canada-based bank, moving the technology from concept into commercial deployment in the much larger U.S. market could be seen as a test of whether tokenized bank deposits can ultimately compete alongside privately issued stablecoins.

TAKEAWAYS
Bitcoin experienced another volatile week, trading through a range of roughly C$113,000 to C$120,000 as investors balanced continued crypto-specific developments against a more challenging macro background. Specifically, data last week showed U.S. consumer prices rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% year-over-year.
The U.S. Producer Price Index also rose 1.3% in September, marking the largest monthly increase since March 2022. Producer prices were 6.3% higher than a year ago, adding to ongoing concerns that inflationary pressure remains embedded further up the supply chain.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said Friday that he does not “prejudge” policy meetings and gave no indication of whether rates will change in October. Hotter CPI and PPI data briefly increased expectations of another rate hike, but markets continue to favour the Fed holding rates steady at its October meeting, with another increase viewed as more likely in December.
Inflation and higher-for-longer interest rates remain a challenge for liquidity, while recent weakness seen in AI and other technology stocks is adding another source of risk.
This week’s Canadian CPI and retail sales data could help shape expectations for the Bank of Canada. In the U.S., the bigger market focus remains the Federal Reserve’s Oct. 27–28 meeting. September’s acceleration in inflation strengthened the case for further tightening, but weaker employment data and cautious Fed commentary have kept markets leaning toward a pause in October.
