A breakdown is a price move below a support level or trading range. The term is used to describe price action when an asset falls below a level that previously held as support. In technical analysis, a breakdown can be used to describe a potential change in market structure, such as a shift from consolidation to a downward move, or a move that invalidates a prior support area. Breakdowns are often discussed alongside factors such as trading volume, volatility, and nearby support and resistance levels.
If Ethereum has held above $3,000 for months but then falls to $2,950 on heavy volume, traders and investors may describe the move as a breakdown below support.
