A breakout is a price move above a resistance level or trading range. The term is used to describe price action when an asset rises above a level that previously acted as resistance. In technical analysis, a breakout can be used to describe a potential change in market structure, such as a shift from consolidation to an upward move, or a move that confirms renewed buying pressure above a prior resistance area. Breakouts are often discussed alongside factors such as trading volume, volatility, and nearby support and resistance levels.
If Ethereum has struggled to move above $3,500 for months but then rises to $3,600 on heavy volume, traders and investors may describe the move as a breakout above resistance.
