A call forwarding scam is a fraud strategy where a scammer tricks a person into forwarding their phone calls to a number controlled by the scammer. A scammer often pretends to be technical support, a mobile carrier, a bank, or a crypto platform and asks the victim to dial a code or change their phone settings. Once the victim inadvertently turns on call forwarding, the scammer may receive calls meant for the victim. The strategy is to intercept account verification calls, bank calls, or support calls. In crypto, this can be used to target accounts that rely on phone-based identity checks or recovery steps.

A scammer pretending to be from a crypto trading platform calls a user and says they need to “secure” their account by dialing a code that activates call forwarding without their knowledge.
