A distributed ledger is a record of transactions or data that is shared across multiple computers instead of being stored in a single central database. In crypto, a blockchain is a type of distributed ledger where transactions are grouped into blocks and linked in order. Each participating node can keep, verify, or share a copy of the ledger according to the network’s rules. A distributed ledger lets many participants maintain a common record without relying on a single central recordkeeper.
The Bitcoin blockchain is a distributed ledger because many independent nodes around the world keep and verify copies of the same transaction history.
